Funerals &
Celebrations of Life FAQs

What happens when we first contact you?

We'll start with a conversation. Ideally, I'll meet you face-to-face at your home, the funeral home, a café, my home or somewhere you're comfortable. We can also meet by video or talk by phone. I generally allow around two hours for our first conversation, although it may not take that long.

How do you get to know someone who has died?

I'll ask questions and listen to the stories you share about their childhood, family, relationships, work, friendships, passions, achievements, quirks and the things they were known for. I'll also ask what they will be remembered for, what their legacy will be and what you'll miss most.

And please tell me the little stories too. The funny, quirky or seemingly insignificant details are often the best stories. These are the things you'll remember now and always.

Can you write the eulogy or tribute?

Yes. I can write the eulogy or tribute based on our conversations, help a family member write their own, or edit something you've already prepared. If you want to write it but don't know where to start, I'll guide you through it. And if you'd rather not deliver it yourself, I can do that for you.

Can family and friends speak during the service?

Absolutely. We can include multiple speakers or create an opportunity for family and friends to share their own memories. I'll help guide everyone beforehand and facilitate the sharing on the day, so people aren't unexpectedly put on the spot and the service continues to flow.

Can there be humour and laughter at a funeral?

Yes. Grief doesn't mean every moment has to be solemn. If your loved one was funny, cheeky or loved a good laugh, there's room for that in their farewell. There can be smiles, stories, laughter and applause alongside the tears. Sometimes those moments are among the most meaningful.

Can we include music, readings, photos or video?

Yes. Depending on the venue and time available, a ceremony can include music, readings or poems, photo or video tributes, family stories, moments of silence, candles or flowers, personal rituals and many other meaningful elements.

Can the ceremony include religious or cultural traditions?

Absolutely. A farewell can incorporate religious, cultural or family traditions if they're meaningful to you. If you'd prefer something more traditional, I'll guide you through what that might look like. If you'd like something more contemporary or personal, we can explore that too.

How do you work with the funeral director?

I see myself as part of the team supporting your family. I'll work hand-in-hand with your funeral director, keeping them updated as we develop the ceremony, sharing the order of service and taking on board feedback. Open communication between the family, funeral director and celebrant is important.

How long does a funeral service usually take?

Around 30 minutes is typical, particularly for a chapel service, but a service can be shorter or longer depending on what you'd like to include and the requirements of the venue. We'll make sure the important moments have the space they deserve while being mindful of the time available.

What if we don't know what we want?

That's completely okay. You don't need to have everything worked out before we meet. I'll guide you through the choices, listen to what matters and help you create a farewell that feels right for your family.

You just need to tell me about them.
